A 2016 replacement for the previous sherry-finished expression, this Tomatin 12 Year Old has been aged in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks. The result is a sweet whisky with notes of apples, citrus and sweet spice.

Tomatin 12 Year Old Review:
NOSE
Apples, nuts, vanilla and a light sherry sweetness. An obvious sherry character with just a hint of sweetness.
PALATE
Apples, sherry sweetness and more apples. Some light sherry and cinnamon, some nutty malt and a light hint of vanilla.
FINISH
Long fade of apples, sherry sweetness & malt.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Just barely on the dry side with a medium body. Medium weight and smooth.
OVERALL
Tomatin 12 Year Old is one of the few Tomatin’s I’ve checked out. It’s certainly no stranger than many of the classic Speyside offerings.
The Tomatin 12 is a sherry-finished whisky that sports a decent nose that’s a bit unwieldy. The whisky lingers strong on the palate delivering sherry sweetness, some fruits and the occasional nutty note. The finish while long is a little less complex with some heavier notes showing up after some time in the glass.
Not what I thought it would be, but enjoyable none the less. A pleasant sherry finish.

Palate: Sweet malt, baked treats, light spices and a light toffee finish.
Finish: Similar make up, with a ginger candy finish.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL: Med-light. Medium body.
OVERALL: Basically the same notes I got from the 46-year old. Spicy, but is clearly sherry dominant.

Palate: Citrus and red berries highlighted by toffee and malt. Some spices like cloves join the mix too.
Finish: Red peapods, sweet malt and just a hint of smoke.

Tomatin 12 Year Old has some really nice notes at the beginning, but then pretty much falls flat. I like the nose, and the sweetness at the end, but it’s pretty boring in the middle. I’d recommend it to fan of sweet Scotches, but not the ones who enjoy them to a depth.
