El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review:

When the opportunity of reviewing a bottle of El Dorado 12 was presented to me, it was like being given the chance to stumble across a hunk of gold at the end of your favourite treasure hunt. Once you’re in possession of the rum, you’ll never want to be parted from it.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 1:

At first sight, the El Dorado 12 certainly has the appearance of a premium rum. The golden hue of the liquor is amply evidenced by the beautifully etched label. But it’s not fancy packaging that does the correct justice to this rum, far from it.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 2:

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum has a nose that’s reminiscent of a mixture of honey and vanilla. In fact, it’s so aromatic, the bottle looks as though it’s been dipped in syrup. Simultaneously heady and sweet, the aroma is simply heavenly. But El Dorado 12 is more than just an aroma. Upon tasting, there’s wafting aromas of coconut and pastry. (wbctx.com) For the first two swigs the taste is reminiscent of a coconut pie. But this is only the start of the good stuff, for the next three or four sips, the flavour is akin to having golden syrup poured over toast.

Now you may wonder why an aromatic rum has such a rough taste? Further swigs of El Dorado 12 reveal that this liquor is surprisingly smooth. The palate of the El Dorado 12 is exactly as the nose has described; honey and vanilla. The aftertaste is creamy and sweet.

Despite this being profusely enjoyed in front of a roaring fire, a bit of water should be shaken over the sleeve of your shirt to get rid of the sticky syrup. Otherwise the sweetness of the El Dorado 12 makes it a dangerous flood that’ll get everything dirty.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 3:

I’ve typically only been able to purchase El Dorado rum on special occasions (usually during this time of year). But that isn’t to say that this rum isn’t enjoyed year round. I’ve been able to purchase a sufficient amount to indulge in this sheer pleasure on several occasions. This rum is like an ice cream with caramel sauce. It makes overused phrases such as; nice, smooth, tasteful, tasty and delightful simply redundant.

The El Dorado 12 is not only an exceptional rum for the money, it’s also the most friendly on the skin and tongue. When sipped, the El Dorado 12 lingers on the palate wonderfully. In fact, this rum is even better than a premium Bacardi rum of the same age! I would have to say that the El Dorado rum is complemented by a good sherry or port during the final sips.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 4:

This is a rum that has sunk so well into the memory, that it easily works wonders on the palate even when sipped neat. The El Dorado 12 is a great sipper and a brilliant mixer, taking nothing away from the quality of the rum.

What to say about an El Dorado 12 that hasn’t already been said? There’s a great deal of ingenuity in the flavour but, unfortunately, not that much in the ranking. But if you’re curious to know more about the rum, buy a bottle and try it yourself.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 6:

I really like this rum, but there are some fairly expensive attractions such as XO, the 12 year old in particular, that make it difficult to keep on hand more than once every four or five months. For this reason, I cannot come to a final verdict.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 7:

I’ve had the pleasure of tasting this rum twice, one vintage and one current. Whilst I can’t say that I’m in love with it; I can’t in any way criticise it. It’s good, it’s aromatic and it’s got lots of sugar to make it nice and sweet. The sherry and Port you might add. But I do consider this rum a classic.

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum Review 8:

El Dorado 12 was the winner of The Caribbean Rum Taste Test first held in 1987. It was the first cross-over competition as opposed to the original Taste Test held in 1966.
